Carry a Cell Phone, Save the World
The eggheads at Purdue University are working on a technology that will give every cell phone the ability to detect nuclear weapons. By using Distributed Nuclear Detection average everyday cell phone users are turned into the high tech version of bomb sniffing dogs.
The way this system works is when your cell phone gets close to nuclear material a signal would be sent out, phones closest to the material would give off the strongest signals. If enough users connect to the network, the exact location as well as the movement of the device is triangulated to help agents diffuse the situation. This doesn’t sound like a bad idea until you get to the part where those Purdue guys are lobbying to make it mandatory to carry a phone equipped with this technology. Personally, I do not have a problem being part of a living breathing cell phone toting, bomb-sniffing super-organism but you do have to question how intrusive this is to your civil rights.
